Item Condition

Complete in box: the cartridge, the manual and the box, all original. Original inserts or paperwork shown in the photos are included; display stands and other photography props are not. The photos are of this exact cartridge — look them over closely for its condition, packaging and details. Every cartridge's shell, label and board are checked for authenticity when it comes into the store, and it's tested before it's listed. It ships in a collector's bag or a hard plastic case.

Item Description

Vectron plays like an attempt to squeeze the speed and color of an arcade vector game such as Atari's Tempest onto the Intellivision, a machine that couldn't draw true vector lines. What came out the other side is a strange, striking game unlike anything else in the Mattel library, programmed by Mark Urbaniec, whose name is tucked into its notorious Easter egg. The glowing, geometric playfield and its bold, carefully chosen color schemes still pop on a television today, and the whole thing moves with an urgency few Intellivision games try for.

The goal is building, not just blasting. You steer an energy block around the playfield, lock it into place and fill each section with energy blasts, assembling an energy base piece by piece while a menagerie of nasties tries to tear it apart. Hungrees, G-spheres, splits and sweeps gnaw at finished sections and go after your block, and the Prizums lurk much further up a long, punishing climb that many players never reach. You can shoot the attackers down or neutralize them with special energy from an E-Pak, but energy is your lifeline, and running dry costs you one of your three blocks. It's fast, tough on the thumbs and very hard to put down, for one player or two.

Vectron has earned a devoted cult following among Intellivision fans, and its Easter egg is famously nasty, close to impossible to pull off. It later turned up on the Intellivision Lives! compilation, but playing it on the original console, with the disc controller under your thumb, is the way to feel what made it such an oddity in its day and such a cult favorite now.

About the game

The object of Vectron is to construct an energy base, section by section. You add each section by moving your energy block in place and filling it with an energy blast. You must protect your energy block against Hungrees, G-spheres, splits, sweeps, and prizums who can destroy it. Shoot them down with energy blasts or neutralize them with special energy from an E-Pak. Don't run out of energy or you lose an energy block. There are three energy blocks per game. When they're gone, the game is over.
