Why it mattered

The comeback that fit in a coat pocket

After the Wii U, Nintendo needed the Switch to work, and it launched in March 2017 with one idea — a tablet that clicks into a dock — and one game, Breath of the Wild, that most people would have bought a console for anyway. Within a year it had Mario Odyssey, Splatoon 2, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe and Xenoblade 2. Within eight it had out-sold every home console Nintendo ever made, and the little gray cards had become the default way Japanese publishers put a physical game on a shelf in America.

The Switch has a remarkable physical library: Nintendo favorites alongside limited-run indie releases, Japanese RPGs, visual novels, and unusual collector editions.

Counts are listings in stock — the same game can appear more than once in different packaging.

Nintendo's own

Breath of the Wild, Super Mario Odyssey, Metroid Dread, Metroid Prime 4, Super Mario 3D All-Stars, Splatoon, Fire Emblem: Three Houses, Xenoblade — the first-party run that sold 150 million consoles.

POKÉMON ACROSS THE SWITCH GENERATIONS

From Let's Go and Sword & Shield to Legends: Arceus, Scarlet & Violet, and beyond—Pokémon found a new home on Switch.

The anime shelf

Sword Art Online, Digimon Survive, Space Adventure Cobra, Dragon Ball FighterZ, Demon Slayer, One Piece, My Hero Academia — the licensed Japanese shelf, mostly Bandai Namco, and on the Switch mostly sealed.

Visual novels and otome

Senren Banka, Illusion of Itehari, Despera Drops, Fault: Milestone One, Archetype Arcadia, Steins;Gate, Code: Realize — the reading shelf, where the Switch quietly became the place to buy a visual novel on a card.

Koei Tecmo clocks in

Atelier Ryza, Samurai Warriors 5, Dynasty Warriors 9 Empires, Fire Emblem Warriors, Persona 5 Strikers, Ninja Gaiden, Fatal Frame — the Gust alchemists and the Omega Force crowd-mowers, under one roof.

Japan's RPGs

Dragon Quest I & II HD-2D, Final Fantasy Pixel Remaster, Disgaea, I Am Setsuna, Octopath Traveler, Xenoblade, Ys, Trails — the console where the Japanese RPG came back to a shelf, in a case, in English.

Sega

Sonic Forces, Sonic Mania, Sonic Frontiers, Sonic Superstars, Super Monkey Ball, Puyo Puyo Tetris, Sega Ages, Sega Genesis Classics, Yakuza — Sonic lives here now, and he brought the Monkey Ball with him.

Two for one

Knights of Pen & Paper. Baldur's Gate 1 & 2. Nexomon & Nexomon: Extinction. Sonic Forces + Super Monkey Ball. Two games in one case, or one game with a very long name.

PAL imports

European physical editions with distinctive packaging. Most Switch games are region-free, but language options and downloadable content may vary by region.

Small prints, big pixels

Bloodstained: Curse of the Moon, Blaster Master Zero, Cyber Shadow, Streets of Rage 4, The Messenger, Owlboy, Super Meat Boy, Sine Mora — the indie shelf, printed in the low thousands by people who care about box art.

Things in the dark

Little Nightmares II, Feardemic: Horror Bundle, Bye Sweet Carole, Shadow Labyrinth, Chronos, Resident Evil, Outlast — the horror shelf, and the Souls-likes that live next door because nobody else wanted them.

Ported from the PC

Baldur's Gate 1 & 2, XCOM 2 Collection, Worms Armageddon, Beholder 3, 80 Days, Divinity, Civilization VI — mouse-and-keyboard games that learned to live on a handheld, some more gracefully than others.

Saturday morning

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Transformers, G.I. Joe, Ghostbusters, Star Wars, Zorro, The Karate Kid, Power Rangers, He-Man — the licensed toy-aisle shelf, thirty years on and still selling cards.

Scoreboards and finish lines

Crash Team Racing: Nitro-Fueled, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, Team Sonic Racing, Hot Wheels Unleashed, FIFA, NBA 2K, Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 1+2, WWE 2K Battlegrounds — the sports shelf, and the racing games that share its aisle.

Bring the kids

Bluey, Paw Patrol, Nicktoons & the Dice of Destiny, Little Friends: Puppy Island, Dinosaurs: Mission Dino Camp, Rabbids Party of Legends — the family shelf, where the Switch replaced the Wii and nobody noticed.

Health bars

Mortal Kombat 1, Mortal Kombat 11, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, Street Fighter 30th, Dragon Ball FighterZ, BlazBlue, Guilty Gear — the fighting shelf, on a console with a d-pad shaped like four buttons.

Games that make you stand up

Ring Fit Adventure, Taiko no Tatsujin, Just Dance, Fitness Boxing, Arms, Nintendo Switch Sports, 1-2-Switch, Labo — the shelf that inherited the Wii's living room, drum controller and all.

Colon: Subtitle

Orebody: Binder's Tale. Bloodstained: Curse of the Moon. Loop8: Summer of Gods. Ghostbusters: Spirits Unleashed. Noob: The Factionless. Nothing on the Switch was allowed out of the building without a subtitle.

Some kind of Edition

Definitive, Deluxe, Legendary, Anniversary—the Switch has an edition for everything. Some include worthwhile extras; others simply have ambitious names. Check each listing to see what's actually included.

Came with the console

Mario Kart 8 Deluxe in a Not for Resale sleeve, the Animal Crossing bundle copy, Switch Sports with the leg strap — the pack-in cards, complete games in plainer clothes.
