Why it matters

The generation that made the disc drive a choice

The Series X and Series S arrived together in November 2020 — a $499 tower with a 4K Blu-ray drive and a $299 white box with no drive at all, the first time a console launched in a version that could not play a disc. Halo Infinite, the game meant to sell it, slipped a full year after a rough showing, so the console launched on backward compatibility and Game Pass instead. Then Microsoft bought Bethesda, then Activision Blizzard, and the question of what an Xbox exclusive even is became the story of the generation.

For a collector, the Series X|S library is a story of two generations overlapping. Some physical releases support both Xbox One and Series X through cross-generation editions or Smart Delivery, while others require newer hardware. The packaging matters: check which consoles a game supports, whether a download is required, and whether its physical edition contains a disc, a redemption code, or additional collectibles. Disc-based games require an Xbox console with a compatible optical drive.

Did you know?Microsoft had already experimented with disc-free Xbox hardware in 2019. But the Series X|S launch made the choice between physical and digital hardware central to the new generation. A digital-only Series X followed in 2024.
Did you know?Halo Infinite was meant to launch with the console in November 2020. After a July gameplay reveal that the internet turned into a meme about a Brute named Craig, Microsoft delayed it a full year, and the Series X launched with no new first-party flagship at all — Assassin's Creed Valhalla and Yakuza: Like a Dragon carried the launch shelf.
Did you know?Most Series X discs are also Xbox One discs. Microsoft's Smart Delivery scheme meant a single disc entitled you to whichever version your console could run, so the case banner often reads Xbox Series X and Xbox One together. A handful of late releases are Series-only, and those are the ones that will be scarce.
Did you know?Some Xbox Series boxes contain no disc at all. Starfield's physical Premium Edition Upgrade shipped as a steelbook, a patch and a download code; Alan Wake 2 skipped discs entirely on release. A sealed box is not proof of a game inside, which is why our listings say exactly what the case holds.
Did you know?Microsoft bought ZeniMax and Bethesda for $7.5 billion in 2021, then Activision Blizzard for $68.7 billion in 2023 — the largest acquisition in the history of the games industry. Call of Duty, Diablo, Doom, Fallout and The Elder Scrolls are now Xbox first-party games, though most of them still ship on PlayStation as part of the regulatory deal.
Did you know?Redfall launched in May 2023 as a Game Pass headliner and was so poorly received that Microsoft closed its developer, Arkane Austin, a year later. The promised 60 fps mode arrived as a final farewell update. It is already the kind of game people buy because of the story around it rather than the one on the disc.
Did you know?The Series X plays nearly every Xbox One disc, plus the same list of 360 and original Xbox games that the Xbox One supported, and adds Auto HDR and FPS Boost to many of them. Kinect games are the exception — no Series console can run them — so an Xbox One shelf and a Series X shelf are, for most purposes, the same shelf.
Did you know?The launch prices held for four and a half years, which is unusual, and then rose twice in 2025 as tariffs and component costs bit — the Series X went from $499 to $599 in May and higher again in the autumn. It makes this the first console generation where the hardware got more expensive over its life, not less.

Assassin's Creed Valhalla, Shadows, Rainbow Six Extraction, Riders Republic, Star Wars Outlaws, Anno 1800, Just Dance — one open-world template, a very strong work ethic, and the annual dance game.
