Why it mattered

The little white box that put a controller in every hand

Nintendo walked away from the horsepower race in 2006 and shipped a console roughly the size of three DVD cases, with a remote you pointed at the TV and a pack-in game about bowling. Sony and Microsoft laughed for about a year. Then the Wii sold out every Christmas until 2009, out-sold both rivals combined for a stretch, and pulled in grandparents, nursing homes and people who had never held a controller. Wii Sports became the best-selling single-platform game ever made, mostly because it came in the box.

The Wii library has something for almost every kind of player: Nintendo classics, couch multiplayer, fitness favorites, cult hits, and plenty of delightful oddities. Physical editions have their own collecting details, too. Original cases, manuals, Wii Sports pack-in sleeves, and Nintendo Selects reprints aren't all interchangeable.

How we grade and photograph

THE SHELVES WII GAMES WORTH REMEMBERING

Hand-picked shelves, filled live from what is in stock right now. Best condition first — jump to a condition below.

Counts are listings in stock — the same game can appear more than once in different packaging.

The grails

Xenoblade Chronicles, Metroid Prime Trilogy, Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn, The Last Story, Pandora's Tower — the Wii games with waiting lists, and the Operation Rainfall three.

Nintendo's own

Super Mario Galaxy, Galaxy 2, Skyward Sword, Twilight Princess, Smash Bros. Brawl, Mario Kart Wii, Donkey Kong Country Returns — the first-party run that carried the console.

Living room instruments

Guitar Hero, Rock Band, DJ Hero, Karaoke Revolution, Just Dance, Dance Dance Revolution — the Wii was a party, and the party came with plastic.

The sweat shelf

Wii Fit, EA Sports Active, Gold's Gym, The Biggest Loser, Zumba, Just Dance — Nintendo sold a bathroom scale for $89 and America stood on it.

It came with a portal

Skylanders Spyro's Adventure, Giants, Swap Force, Trap Team, SuperChargers, Imaginators — six years of Activision selling plastic figures with a disc attached.

The brick shelf

LEGO Star Wars III, LEGO Batman, LEGO Batman 2, LEGO Indiana Jones 2, LEGO Lord of the Rings, LEGO Harry Potter — Traveler's Tales built the same game nine times and every one of them was good.

Bring the kids

Epic Mickey, LEGO Star Wars, LEGO Batman, de Blob, Rayman Raving Rabbids, SpongeBob, Kirby's Epic Yarn — the reason the Wii lived in the family room and not the basement.

Ported to the Wii, somehow

Resident Evil 4, Call of Duty: World at War, Dead Rising: Chop Till You Drop, Monster Hunter Tri, Marvel Ultimate Alliance — big-console games rebuilt for a remote and a nunchuk, some better for it.

Wrestlers and quarterbacks

WWE SmackDown vs. Raw, Madden All-Play, NHL 2K11, Tiger Woods, Punch-Out!!, Mario Super Sluggers, Deca Sports — the sports shelf, where the Wii Remote pretended to be a bat, a club and a fist.

Games about sitting on the couch

Game Party, Carnival Games, Wii Party, Family Game Night, Mensa Academy, Mystery Case Files, Trivial Pursuit — the Wii's largest genre by volume was "things you do at Thanksgiving."

Red band, Nintendo Selects

Mario Kart Wii, Super Mario Galaxy, Wii Sports Resort, Twilight Princess, Animal Crossing: City Folk — the $19.99 reprints with the red stripe, and the plain first prints they replaced.
