Why PlayStation

Born from a broken deal

Sony was supposed to build a CD add-on for the Super Nintendo. When Nintendo walked away at CES 1991, engineer Ken Kutaragi turned the humiliation into a console — and in 1995 the PlayStation undercut Sega by $100 and never looked back.

Five generations later the throughline is the same: mature, cinematic, and the best place for Japanese RPGs and horror. PlayStation collectors chase black-label first prints, long-box launch titles, and a PS2 back catalog that is still full of games that never got re-released.

Two handhelds, one cult

The PSP in 2005 was a PlayStation 2 you could carry — UMD movies, Crisis Core, Monster Hunter, and the best Final Fantasy remakes ever made. The Vita in 2012 was better still, an OLED screen and a twin-stick layout, and it sold so quietly that its fans still take it personally.

Collectors love both for the same reason: small libraries with real depth, and a Vita that is region-free, so the Japanese shelf is wide open. We photograph every UMD case and every Vita card box, front and back.
