Why it matters

The second printing, the one you can afford

Modern Masters arrived in June 2013 with a job no Magic set had before: reprint the cards people actually wanted — Tarmogoyf, Vendilion Clique, the Modern staples — in a short run at a premium price, and let the format breathe. It sold out in a weekend. Every Masters set since has been a negotiation between two groups: the players who want the price of a card to come down, and the people who already own it. Wizards split the difference by printing in limited runs with new frames, new art and box toppers, so a Masters printing is its own thing on a collector's shelf and not just a cheaper version.

The family grew fast. Eternal Masters reached back to Legacy, Iconic Masters and Masters 25 went for the famous names, and Ultimate Masters closed the first era in 2018 with box-topper foils. Then the format changed: Modern Horizons printed new cards straight into Modern instead of reprints, Double Masters put two rares in every pack, Commander Legends made Commander draftable and gave us Jeweled Lotus, and the Remastered sets rebuilt whole blocks in retro frames. What's on this shelf is the result: the cards that run Modern, Legacy and Commander, in the printings that were made to be opened. Cards $40 and up are photographed (front); every card is priced to the live market.
