Why it matters

Thirty years of expansions, one shelf

Alpha came out in August 1993 and the first expansion, Arabian Nights, followed in December with seventy-eight cards and the game's first set symbol, a scimitar. Everything since has arrived the same way: three or four times a year, a new world, a new set symbol, a few cards that change the game and a few that become worth more than the rest of the box. For twenty years the sets came in blocks — Mirage, Tempest and Urza's Saga blocks of three, then Ravnica's guilds and Innistrad's gothic horror — and since Dominaria in 2018 each set has stood on its own. Core sets ran alongside, Alpha's descendants through Tenth Edition and the Magic 2010s to Foundations.

What makes the old sets different is a promise: in 1996 Wizards published the Reserved List, roughly five hundred cards from the first years that it would never reprint, and kept to it. The dual lands, Library of Alexandria, Survival of the Fittest, City of Traitors, Grim Monolith — the supply is what was printed thirty years ago and what survived. The new sets have their own gravity: Sheoldred, the Apocalypse, the Universes Beyond crossovers that put Final Fantasy, Spider-Man and the Avatar cast into Standard. Every card on this page is scanned front and back, and the ones that cost real money are photographed as the exact one you'll receive.
