Why it matters

Built for four players, printed one deck at a time

Commander started as a judges' after-hours format in the 1990s — 100-card singleton decks around a legendary creature — and Wizards didn't print for it until 2011, when five preconstructed decks arrived with fifty-one brand-new cards: Flusterstorm, Scavenging Ooze, Chaos Warp, the first cards ever designed for a four-player table. The decks came back every year after that, and each one left a few cards behind that the format still runs on — True-Name Nemesis in 2013, the partner commanders of 2016, Teferi's Protection in 2017, Dockside Extortionist in 2019 — none of them ever in a booster.
