Why it matters

The same idea, again with a bigger screen and a red card

Nintendo did not reinvent anything in 2025. The Switch 2 is a Switch — a tablet that clicks into a dock — with a 7.9-inch 1080p screen, magnetic Joy-Cons that double as mice, and enough horsepower to run Cyberpunk 2077 and Elden Ring on a handheld. It launched June 5, 2025 at $449.99, with a Mario Kart World bundle available for $499.99. It sold 3.5 million in four days, the fastest start any Nintendo hardware has had. The gamble was that people wanted more of the same thing, and they did.

The library is young, so this shelf is short and honest: a handful of Nintendo's own games, Switch 2 Editions of Switch classics, and the big PlayStation-era ports that finally fit in a bag. The thing to check is the box. Many third-party releases are "Game-Key Cards" — a card that unlocks a download rather than holding the game — and the box says so in a white band along the bottom. We say so too. Cards are red, region-free, and still taste terrible. We photograph every case and card.

Counts are listings in stock — the same game can appear more than once in different packaging.

Nintendo's own

Mario Kart World, Donkey Kong Bananza, Metroid Prime 4: Beyond, Pokémon Legends: Z-A, Kirby Air Riders, Hyrule Warriors — the first-party shelf, and the only games on the console that are never Game-Key Cards.

Switch 2 Editions

Breath of the Wild, Tears of the Kingdom, Kirby and the Forgotten Land, Super Mario Party Jamboree, Metroid Prime 4 — Switch games rebuilt for the new hardware, on a red card that holds the whole thing.

BLOCKBUSTER GAMES, NOW ON SWITCH 2

Big adventures from across gaming, brought to Nintendo's latest hardware—from upgraded favorites to ambitious new ports.

Game-Key Card, and we say so

The card holds a key, not the game: download once, then keep the card in the slot. Resellable, unlike a code — but check your storage and your Wi-Fi first. Every one we list is labeled.

Things in the dark

Little Nightmares III, Resident Evil Requiem, Resident Evil 7, Village, Elden Ring, The Duskbloods, Shadow Labyrinth — the horror shelf and the Souls-likes, sharing an aisle again because it worked last time.

Square Enix, on a red card

Final Fantasy VII Remake and Rebirth, Bravely Default HD, Dragon Quest VII Reimagined, Octopath Traveler 0 — the publisher that treats every new Nintendo console as a chance to sell you Final Fantasy VII again.

Nintendo Classics, and a Virtual Boy

The Virtual Boy headset shell, the Nintendo Classics controllers, the GameCube pad, the Switch 2 Camera — the accessories aisle, where Nintendo resurrected a 1995 failure as a subscription perk and we bought two.

Launch window, June 2025

Mario Kart World, Cyberpunk 2077, Street Fighter 6, Bravely Default HD, Split Fiction, Hitman, Hogwarts Legacy, Survival Kids — the first six weeks, when the shelf at the store was exactly this long.

Counted in Roman

Final Fantasy VII Rebirth. Little Nightmares III. Civilization VII. Dragon Quest VII Reimagined. Street Fighter 6, sadly, uses an Arabic numeral and is not invited.

Colon: Subtitle

Metroid Prime 4: Beyond. Hyrule Warriors: Age of Imprisonment. Pokémon Legends: Z-A. Daemon X Machina: Titanic Scion. New console, same punctuation.
