The photos are of this exact cartridge — look them over closely for its condition, packaging and details. Every cartridge's shell, label and board are checked for authenticity when it comes into the store, and it's tested before it's listed. It ships in a collector's bag or a hard plastic case.

Item Description

Space Battle began life as a Battlestar Galactica game. When Mattel couldn't secure the license, the name changed, though the enemy fighters streaking toward your cockpit still carry a hint of the Cylon raider. It was programmed at APh Technological Consulting by Hal Finney, who later became a well-known figure in cryptography, and it was part of the very first wave of Intellivision cartridges as Mattel's console reached stores at the end of the seventies.

It plays on two levels, which was a bold idea for its time. The radar screen puts your mothership at the center with alien squadrons closing in, and you command three color-coded squadrons of your own, sending them out to intercept, calling them home or committing them to a fight. When a squadron makes contact you can drop into a first-person cockpit view of a starfield and a targeting reticle. There you lead your shots against fighters sweeping in from off screen and slide away from their return fire as it swells toward you. Six alien fleets of different sizes are on the attack, and their ships dodge your shots while answering with photon blasts. Lose your squadrons, or let the mothership take too much damage, and the battle is lost.

That mix of strategy map and dogfight gave Space Battle a commander's feel few home games of 1979 could match, and a two-player mode lets a friend share the fight. It's a cornerstone of the original Intellivision lineup, and its two-screen design still plays with real tension, an early glimpse of where home space combat was headed.
