Item Condition

Complete in box: the cartridge, the manual and the box, all original. Original inserts or paperwork shown in the photos are included; display stands and other photography props are not. The photos are of this exact cartridge — look them over closely for its condition, packaging and details. Every cartridge's shell, label and board are checked for authenticity when it comes into the store, and it's tested before it's listed. It ships in a collector's bag or a hard plastic case.

Item Description

The first wave looks familiar: thirty-two invaders in eight columns, shuffling side to side and stepping lower every time they reach the edge of the screen. Space Armada is Mattel's answer to Space Invaders, the arcade sensation every home console owner wanted in 1981, built by APh Technological Consulting to bring that marching-alien panic to the Intellivision. Thin the ranks and the survivors speed up, three bunkers soak up the bombs raining down on your laser cannon, and a saucer drifts across the top of the screen carrying a random bonus worth chasing.

Where it earns an identity of its own is in the later rounds. The aliens start dropping explosive bombs with a blast radius and homing missiles that track your gun, and some of them simply vanish, turning invisible at random so you have to track a fleet you can only partly see. Your bunkers don't rebuild between waves, but shooting the saucer fully restores the most damaged one, which turns that bonus target into a real tactical decision. Points scale with the round number, so the big scores live deep in the game, and a practice mode lets you pick up again at the last round you reached.

There's a bit of history in the code, too. Space Armada is credited as the first game on the system to animate more than eight moving objects, using a graphics-RAM sequencing trick to put a whole fleet in motion on hardware that wasn't designed for it. Played with the Intellivision's disc controller, it has a deliberate, nerve-wracking rhythm, and it captures exactly how the Invaders craze felt on Mattel's side of the early console wars.

About the game

Space Armada is a clone of the game Space Invaders. Rows of bomb dropping aliens are invading your home planet, and you need to protect it! You control a laser gun at the bottom of the screen; your goal is to earn as many points as possible by destroying the waves of attacking aliens at the top of the screen. The aliens march steadily downward, and if they reach the ground or you run out of laser guns, the game is over. When all aliens in a wave are destroyed, you move on to the next, more challenging round. From time to time, a flying saucer will pass by at the top of the screen which can be shot for bonus points.
