Complete in box: the cartridge, the manual and the box, all original. Original inserts or paperwork shown in the photos are included; display stands and other photography props are not. The photos are of this exact cartridge — look them over closely for its condition, packaging and details. Every cartridge's shell, label and board are checked for authenticity when it comes into the store, and it's tested before it's listed. It ships in a collector's bag or a hard plastic case.

Item Description

Somewhere in that narrow strait your opponent may have laid a minefield, or may simply want you to think so. Sea Battle is a real-time naval war for two players, and it is one of the most thoughtful games the Intellivision ever produced: half chess match, half arcade shoot-out, with bluffing built into the rules.

Each side commands thirteen vessels across eight ship types, including battleships, aircraft carriers, destroyers, submarines, PT boats, troop transports, mine layers and minesweepers, and the goal is to invade the enemy's home port while defending your own across an island-dotted ocean. Ships are grouped into fleets of up to three, with no more than four fleets at sea at once, and each fleet moves at the speed of its slowest ship. Your opponent sees how many ships are in a fleet but not which ones, so a lone marker could be a harmless transport or a battleship looking for trouble. Mine layers seed the straits, minesweepers clear them, and a distinctive sonar ping keeps the atmosphere tense.

When fleets meet and someone chooses to fight, the map gives way to a close-up battle screen where you maneuver and aim each ship's weapons, from the submarine's long-range torpedoes to the battleship's heavy salvos. Retreat is possible, but only if you survive fifteen seconds of enemy fire first.

Developed by APh Technological Consulting and published by Mattel in 1980, Sea Battle has long been ranked among the system's finest strategy games, and it gets better the longer two people play it, learning each other's habits and inventing new tricks. Few cartridges of its day asked this much of two rivals sharing a couch, or gave back nearly as much.

About the game

In Sea Battle, players must successfully invade the home port of their opponent while protecting their own ports from invasion. Game play takes place in an island-dotted ocean, with one player's home port at the lower-left corner of the screen and the other player's home port at the upper-right corner. Each player has access to thirteen naval vessels representing eight different ship types.[2] The player may organize these ships into smaller fleets, with a maximum of three ships per fleet and four fleets active at one time. Single-ship fleets are permitted, while larger fleets may not have two ships of the same type in one fleet. When fleets are deployed, the first ship selected as part of the fleet becomes its flagship.
