Complete in box: the cartridge, the manual and the box, all original. Original inserts or paperwork shown in the photos are included; display stands and other photography props are not. The photos are of this exact cartridge — look them over closely for its condition, packaging and details. Every cartridge's shell, label and board are checked for authenticity when it comes into the store, and it's tested before it's listed. It ships in a collector's bag or a hard plastic case.

Item Description

Huddle up, punch in a formation, pick a play and hope the person next to you on the couch did not see it coming. NFL Football turned the Intellivision keypad into a playbook, and for players who had only known sports games as a couple of blips and a ball, that was a revelation.

Each team fields five players. Before every down both players enter a formation and a play on the keypad, choosing from a menu of offensive and defensive options diagrammed in the instruction manual, and then the snap turns strategy into action. You control one man at a time while the computer runs the rest of your squad, throwing to one of two receivers, scrambling, kicking, punting and tackling as the field scrolls to follow the ball. There are three timeouts per side, safeties and touchbacks, a referee's whistle, crowd cheers and a starter's-pistol crack to end each quarter.

Designed by Ken Smith and Kevin Miller, it was part of the sports lineup that built the Intellivision's reputation for depth, and reviewers of the day noticed. Video magazine's Arcade Alley column said it would make fans feel they had reached Super Bowl heaven, and a 1982 Video guide called its scrolling field and range of plays unmatched in video games.

Today it plays like an early ancestor of the playbook-driven football games that followed. It asks for patience and a little study, and it rewards a regular opponent who likes trying to read your mind on third down.
