Item Condition

Complete in box: the cartridge, the manual and the box, all original. Original inserts or paperwork shown in the photos are included; display stands and other photography props are not. The photos are of this exact cartridge — look them over closely for its condition, packaging and details. Every cartridge's shell, label and board are checked for authenticity when it comes into the store, and it's tested before it's listed. It ships in a collector's bag or a hard plastic case.

Item Description

Before Astrosmash, and before the sports lineup that made Mattel's name, the very first Intellivision owners sat down to a deck of cards. Las Vegas Poker & Blackjack was the game packed in with the original Master Component, which makes it the first thing many families ever saw their new console do, and it set a tone very different from the shooting galleries on rival systems: patient, thoughtful and a little bit grown-up.

The cartridge offers blackjack plus poker in two classic forms, 7-Card Stud and 5-Card Draw, for one or two players. You decide how much money comes to the table, then bet your stake hand by hand against a computer dealer whose shifty eyes give away more than any card player should. The keypad controller is the quiet star here. Bets and decisions are punched in on the number pad rather than wrestled out of a joystick, and the deliberate rhythm of card play suits the Intellivision's controller perfectly.

Developed by APh Technological Consulting, with John Brooks writing the program, it captures the console's whole pitch in miniature. The Intellivision was pitched as a smarter machine for the living room, and a card table was a natural place for grown-ups to start. Players still enjoy seeing how small a bankroll they can start with and still run it up, and more than one has noticed that the odds feel kinder than a real casino's.

For Intellivision collectors it is a foundation piece, the cartridge that opened the library. It is also a charming window onto home video games before the arcade boom took over, back in 1979, when a console's first job was to prove it could be good company at the card table.
