The photos are of this exact cartridge — look them over closely for its condition, packaging and details. Every cartridge's shell, label and board are checked for authenticity when it comes into the store, and it's tested before it's listed. It ships in a collector's bag or a hard plastic case.

Item Description

There is something quietly perfect about Frog Bog. Two frogs sit on lily pads in a pond, flies drift through the air above them, and the morning sky slowly darkens into night as the pair compete to eat as many bugs as they can before the day runs out. It is a relaxed, good-natured game and among the most charming on the Intellivision.

The skill is in the timing. Press the button and your frog flicks out its tongue, but it only connects if the fly is in just the right spot, so every leap from pad to pad is a little calculation of arc and angle. Misjudge a jump and you splash into the water, losing precious seconds as your frog paddles back to the nearest pad. The darkening sky is more than decoration, too: as morning gives way to night the flies grow harder to pick out, and the whole match plays out in a tight three minutes, so a single bad leap late in the evening can decide the winner.

Developed by APh Technological Consulting and published by Mattel Electronics in 1982, Frog Bog takes its inspiration from Gremlin's 1978 arcade game Frogs, and Mattel later brought it to the Atari 2600 as Frogs and Flies. Play against a friend, or let the computer take the other frog for a solo match.

It is a lovely reminder that early console games did not have to be about lasers and explosions, and a perfect two-player cartridge for a laid-back evening on original Intellivision hardware.

About the game

Frog Bog is a video game released by Mattel Electronics in 1982, developed by APH Technological Consulting. Players control a frog on a lily pad, competing to catch the most insects within a three-minute time limit. The challenge involves using the frog's tongue to capture flying insects while avoiding falling into the water, which would waste valuable time. The game features a dynamic day-night cycle that progressively makes insect-catching more difficult as the background transitions from morning to night, adding complexity to gameplay. The player with the most insects at the end of the time limit wins the game.
