Item Condition

Complete in box: the cartridge, the manual and the box, all original; anything beyond that is included only if you can see it in the photos. For the specifics, look to the photos — they're of this exact item. Every cartridge's shell, label and board are checked for authenticity when it comes into the store, and it's tested before it's listed. It ships in a collector's bag or a hard plastic case.

Item Description

Step forward and the corridor lurches toward you. Turn a corner and a skeleton is waiting, rendered in the Intellivision's chunky pseudo-3D, close enough to swing at. Advanced Dungeons & Dragons: Treasure of Tarmin put home players inside a dungeon in first person in 1983, when most console adventures were still viewed from far above, and that perspective alone made it feel like a glimpse of where games were heading.

Tarmin is surprisingly deep for its cartridge. You start with a lowly bow, a little food and a handful of arrows, then descend a dungeon of maze-like levels, each ringed by an outer hallway, in search of the Minotaur who guards the treasure. Your hero has two separate kinds of strength, War and Spiritual, and the monsters target one or the other, so a brawl with a physical brute and a clash with a ghostly horror drain very different reserves. Enemies and treasures come in color-coded tiers of power, so learning what each color means becomes part of the craft, and choosing which weapon or spell to bring to which fight is the heart of the game. Rare spellbooks add strange magic for the brave or the lucky.

Programmed by Tom Loughry at APh Technological Consulting for Mattel Electronics, it followed Cloudy Mountain as the Intellivision's second AD&D cartridge and took the license in a completely different direction, trading the earlier game's overhead map for a view from inside the maze.

Turn-based battles, careful resource management and a dungeon that keeps pulling you deeper make it a remarkably ambitious RPG for the pre-NES console era. Tabletop players curious about where first-person dungeon crawling began will find it here, on the hardware it was made for, and it is a real trip back to the beginning.
