Item Condition

Game only: the cartridge in a protective holder, no box or manual. Look over the photos for condition, packaging and details. Every cartridge's shell, label and board are checked for authenticity when it comes into the store, and it's tested before it's listed. It ships in a collector's bag or a hard plastic case.

Item Description

You sit in a small square at the center of the board while lines of colored shapes creep toward you from all four sides. That is Zoop, and it is a puzzle game that plays more like a shoot-'em-up than a block-stacker.

Your piece slides around the middle square and fires at whichever line is closest to breaking through. Hit a shape of your own color and it vanishes, with the shot carrying on through any matching shapes behind it for a satisfying chain. Hit a different color and you swap colors with it, which is where the real strategy lives: every miss changes what you can clear next, so the best players read all four sides at once and set up their own combos. As the pace climbs, it becomes a frantic test of reflexes and planning at the same time.

British studio Hookstone developed Zoop and Viacom New Media published it in 1995 on a remarkable spread of systems, from the SNES and Genesis to the PlayStation, PC and Game Boy. The Game Gear version puts that twitchy, color-swapping loop on a backlit handheld, a natural fit for quick bursts of play.

Zoop is a slice of the mid-'90s puzzle boom that tried something different from the Tetris template, and it still feels distinctive today. Its rhythm of quick decisions and sudden reversals is perfect for short sessions, and it brings an offbeat, high-energy puzzler to the Game Gear shelf.
