Item Description

You are a giant, levitating samurai head. You fly across a zombified America, and you fight back by spitting rapid-fire eyeballs and vomit at everything in sight. Zombie Nation does not ease you into its premise; it simply hands you the controller and dares you to keep a straight face. Decades later, it is still the game NES fans reach for when someone asks for the strangest thing on the system, and Mashable once ranked it the second-weirdest video game of all time.

The story, straight from the back of a B-movie poster, starts in 1999 with a meteorite crashing in the Nevada desert. It turns out to be Darc Seed, an alien who uses magnetic rays to turn the population into zombies, brings the Statue of Liberty to life and seizes the legendary samurai sword Shura. Only Namakubi, the great head of the samurai, can set things right. Getting to take down an animated, evil Lady Liberty is every bit as surreal as it sounds.

Underneath the shock value is a sharp little shooter. Namakubi chews through buildings, zombie snipers, zeppelins and lava monsters, and when a structure crumbles, zombie hostages leap out; catch them to power up your firepower. Your life bar is a row of eight tiny heads, the music shifts to a dramatic theme when you are down to your last one, and the scrolling screen will crush you if you dawdle. Like Mega Man, it lets you pick your starting stage from four, with easy and hard difficulty settings before the final showdown with Darc Seed.

The game began in Japan as Abarenbou Tengu, starring a flying tengu mask, and the American release from developer KAZe and publisher Meldac swapped in the severed samurai head and the zombie-invasion plot that made it infamous. That cult reputation was strong enough that City Connection re-released both versions together for Switch and PC in 2021. The NES cartridge is where the legend started, and nothing else in an 8-bit shooter collection starts a conversation quite like it.

About the game

1999. What appeared to be a harmless meteorite crashing in the Nevada desert has turned out to be Darc Seed, an evil alien creature with horrible powers. By shooting strange magnetic rays, Darc Seed had turned the helpless nation into zombies and had brought the Statue of Liberty to life to do his dirty work. These rays had also given him control over many deadly weapons, but none were more powerful than the legendary samurai sword, Shura. When the great head of the samurai, Namakubi, heard that the sword had fallen into evil hands, he set off immediately for the United States. For only he possessed the strength and knowledge needed to recapture the magical sword and free the U.S. from the evil clutches of Darc Seed.
