Item Description

Before it was A Link to the Past, it was Kamigami no Triforce, "the Triforce of the Gods." Japanese players got it first, in November 1991, and the English version followed in 1992. The name carries enough weight in Japan that Nintendo titled its 3DS follow-up, known in the West as A Link Between Worlds, Kamigami no Triforce 2.

The adventure opens on a stormy night, with Link answering Princess Zelda's telepathic plea and slipping into Hyrule Castle through a secret passage. The wizard Agahnim has seized power and is spiriting away the descendants of the Seven Sages, and Link's quest to stop him leads through three pendants, to the Master Sword resting in the Lost Woods, and then to a stunning turn into the Dark World, a twisted reflection of Hyrule ruled by Ganon. Moving between the two worlds with the Magic Mirror, spotting how a ledge or a rock in one opens a path in the other, is one of the cleverest ideas in the series.

The dungeons are classics of the form, each built around an item that rewards inventive thinking: the Hookshot, the Pegasus Boots, the Hammer, the Fire Rod, the Cane of Somaria and more. Many of Zelda's lasting traditions take shape here, from the spin attack to the Master Sword itself, and Koji Kondo's score introduced melodies the series still returns to, including Zelda's Lullaby and the Kakariko Village theme. Between dungeons, the overworld is crowded with secrets, from Pieces of Heart behind cracked walls to bottles waiting to be filled with fairies, and both maps reward players who poke at every bush and boulder.

The Japanese original is the game as Nintendo's team first wrote it, and its title and parts of its script were reworked for the English release. Playing it on a Super Famicom is the closest you can get to meeting Hyrule the way Japanese players did in 1991, and it makes a striking centerpiece for a Super Famicom shelf.
