Item Description

A cannon shell tears into his ship, the Great Vortex of Canaan swallows what is left, and Adol Christin wakes on an island where the locals don't trust anyone without a tail. That is how Ys: The Ark of Napishtim opens, and it is a fine introduction to the red-haired adventurer if you missed his earlier exploits. Nihon Falcom released it on PC in 2003 as the sixth main entry in the series, and Konami's PlayStation 2 version arrived in North America in 2005 as the first English-language Ys release since the 16-bit era.

The Canaan Islands are home to the Rehda, an elf-like people wary of tailless humans, and Adol's first friends there are the priestess Olha, who nurses him back to health, and her shy younger sister Isha. Sprites are unleashing ancient evils around the islands, and Adol is soon the only outsider able to push back. It is a classic Ys setup: a stranger washed ashore, a people in trouble, and a hero who settles things with a sword.

Combat is where it shines. Adol attacks in real time with an automatic three-hit combo that changes with the sword in hand, and the game's three Emelas blades each have their own personality: Livart, a balanced wind sword with tornado magic; Blirante, a slow, powerful fire sword; and Ericcil, a quick lightning rapier that fires homing bolts. Swapping between them takes a tap of a shoulder button, and many enemies are vulnerable only to one of two jump attacks, so fights become a fast dance of switching and leaping. Green Emel stones dropped by enemies upgrade the swords, and harder difficulty settings are there for players who want the series' traditional bite. Konami's port added the optional Trials of Alma, plus a handy option to restart the current screen instead of returning to a save point.

The Ark of Napishtim also matters to Falcom's history: its engine became the foundation for Ys: The Oath in Felghana and Ys Origin, two of the most celebrated action games in the series. The adventure can be finished in under 20 hours and moves at a clip that makes replays tempting. If you came to Ys through its modern releases, this is the PlayStation 2 chapter that bridges the classic era and the series you know today.
