Item Description
The Dragon of Dojima is doing laundry. At the start of Yakuza 3, Kazuma Kiryu has left the Tokyo underworld behind to run the Morning Glory orphanage on a quiet Okinawa beach with Haruka, cooking dinners, settling squabbles between the kids and trying to live like an ordinary man. Then a land deal threatens to bulldoze the orphanage, a shooting back in Tokyo shakes the Tojo Clan, and Kiryu is pulled back toward Kamurocho one more time.
That split between sunny Okinawa and neon-lit Kamurocho gives Yakuza 3 its personality. The early hours are slower and more personal than earlier entries, and the story grows into a tangle of political schemes, rival families and outside interests, with memorable figures like the hot-headed Rikiya Shimabukuro and the cold, calculating Mine Yoshitaka. Sega's team gives it the series' trademark mix of operatic crime drama and heartfelt character moments, and Kiryu's role as a reluctant father figure makes the stakes feel personal.
The street fighting is where Yakuza 3 shines on PS3 hardware. Kiryu brawls through gangs with punches, throws and environmental weapons, and Heat Actions turn a full meter into brutal, cinematic finishers using whatever is nearby. A new Revelations system has him snapping photos of strange everyday scenes on his phone and turning them into new techniques. Off the clock, Kamurocho and the Ryukyu district are packed with substories ranging from touching to absurd, plus batting cages, darts, fishing and other diversions that make it easy to lose an evening.
This was the first Yakuza built for the PlayStation 3 to reach the West, and the jump to HD let Sega's team render Kamurocho and Okinawa in rich detail for the first time. It also sets up the expanded casts of Yakuza 4 and beyond. For anyone following Kiryu's saga in order, the original PS3 release is a key chapter, and the one where the series found its balance between the lighter side of life and the darker side of the city.
