Item Description
Xevious did something few shooters had done before it: it made you feel like you were flying over a real place. Designed by Masanobu Endo for Namco, the arcade game swapped the black void of space for a landscape that scrolls beneath your ship, and it filled that landscape with targets, secrets and a mythology of its own.
The Solvalou fighter carries two weapons, and using both at once is the heart of the game: a zapper for air targets and a blaster that drops bombs on ground installations, aimed with a targeting sight that floats ahead of your ship. Enemy squadrons swirl overhead while turrets and vehicles dot the terrain below. Indestructible Bacura panels spin into your path and can only be dodged. Hidden Sol citadels lurk underground, revealed only when your targeting sight passes over them; bomb one to raise it, then bomb it again to destroy it. And then there is the Andor Genesis, a huge floating mothership that you drive off by landing a bomb on its core.
That blend of air and ground combat, hidden secrets worth hunting for and a world with a story behind it made Xevious a landmark, and its ideas run through decades of vertical shooters that followed.
The 7800 conversion is a showpiece for the system, with sharp, colorful graphics that make good use of the console's palette. It is the cartridge to reach for if you want to show someone that the 7800 could handle a serious arcade port, and a fine way to experience Endo's landmark shooter on original hardware.

About the game
It's a nightmare, but it's true! Research shows that we are the actual aliens on Earth, and the ruthless Xevions are the original inhabitants. Now the Xevions want Earth back -- minus humans! Their invasion forces are fierce -- the land is crawling with deadly Domogram Rovers; the sky is black with Toroid Patrol Fleets and Zoshi Death Squads. Our puny weapons offer no defense. Earth's only hope is our powerful new Solvalou Fighter Plane. Its pilot will have a single mission: Penetrate the enemy ranks and destroy the Xevious Mother Ship. The mission is dangerous. We can't guarantee success. But at this point, it's do or die! One small problem. We still need a pilot. Any volunteers?
