Land a clean combo and Xena lets loose her famous warrior yell, which tells you plenty about the spirit of this 1999 PlayStation adventure. Developed by Universal Studios Digital Arts and published by Electronic Arts while the show was still on the air, Xena: Warrior Princess is a third-person hack-and-slash that mixes swordplay with platform jumping and puzzle solving, all built around the larger-than-life heroine of one of syndicated TV's biggest hits.
The story feels like a lost episode. The sorceress Kalabrax has escaped centuries of imprisonment and wants revenge on the world and the gods who trapped her, and to reach her full power she needs to sacrifice an Amazon queen. Her choice is Gabrielle, so Xena sets out to rescue her best friend, cutting through a parade of villains along the way.
The chakram is the game's best idea. Xena can throw it to hit enemies, cut chains and flip switches, and you can steer it in mid-air, though she is left open to anyone nearby while you guide it, so timing a throw becomes its own little gamble. Combat rewards chaining button combinations into longer attacks, and across 21 levels you will rescue hostages with well-placed ranged strikes, consult scrolls for hints on beating bosses, and fill a karma meter by defeating enemies rather than killing them, which grants a burst of temporary invincibility. Faces of Lucy Lawless and Renee O'Connor were texture-mapped onto the characters, so Xena and Gabrielle look the part.
Critics were split: some found it rough around the edges, while IGN called the chakram "by far the most innovative part of the game" and Next Generation rated it four out of five. What it captures is the show's swagger, its mix of myth, camp and heroics, at the height of Xena's late-'90s popularity. It is a fun slice of TV tie-in history, and the only way to throw that chakram yourself on the original PlayStation.
Die hard fans of the Warrior Princess now can now bring her along wherever they go, thanks to the release of XENA: Warrior Princess. Xena comes to the Game Boy Color with all the thrills and chills the fans of her TV show have come to expect. You take control of Xena as she does battle on land and in the water. Try to master fast-scrolling rides full of dangerous obstacles as you run, jump, climb, and swim your way through 16 pulse-pounding levels of heroic challenges. Use the Game Boy Color infrared ports to hook up with a friend who also has the game and you can unlock special hidden levels in each cartridge. This game could only be more fun if it came with your own chakram.
