Your best sniper has survived a dozen missions, earned a nickname and a promotion, and is now one bad dice roll away from a Chryssalid. That tension is what XCOM: Enemy Unknown is built on. Firaxis Games, the studio behind Civilization, reimagined the 1994 strategy classic UFO: Enemy Unknown for a new generation, and 2K's 2012 release proved that a demanding turn-based tactics game could thrive on a console, with an interface designed for a controller from the ground up.
The game runs on two layers. On the battlefield you move a small squad from cover to cover, flanking aliens, setting up overwatch and choosing which soldier takes the risky shot. Soldiers grow into four classes, Assault, Heavy, Sniper and Support, each with its own skill tree, and anyone you lose is gone for good. The enemy roster escalates from scrawny Sectoids and the disguised Thin Men to hulking Mutons, terrifying Chryssalids and worse, so every new alien sighting changes your plans.
Back at headquarters the strategy layer is just as gripping. Dr. Vahlen's research team studies recovered alien technology, Dr. Shen's engineers turn it into lasers, plasma and armor, and you dig out new facilities in an underground base viewed in a cross-section that looks like an ant farm. Every month the Council of member nations judges your performance, and every abduction you can't answer raises panic around the world. Launching satellites, choosing which crisis to answer and deciding what to build next are agonizing calls, and they make every mission feel connected.
Enemy Unknown revived a dormant franchise and launched a modern series, followed by the Enemy Within expansion and XCOM 2. It is famous for stories players write themselves, the rookie who became a colonel, the squad wiped out on a terror mission, and the Ironman option, which locks you into a single save, makes every one of those stories permanent. On PS3 it is a complete strategy campaign on a disc, built to be played from the couch.
XCOM: Enemy Unknown is a turn-based tactics game with a strategic management layer, and a reimagining of the 1994 strategy title UFO: Enemy Unknown. Players lead a squad of soldiers through turn-based combat missions against alien forces, using cover, positioning, and class-based abilities, where fallen soldiers can be lost permanently. Between missions, players oversee a central base: researching recovered alien technology, building facilities, managing funds, and deciding which global threats to respond to as they try to keep member nations from abandoning the project.
