Item Description

X-Men: Mutant Academy hit shelves on July 14, 2000, the very day Bryan Singer's X-Men opened in theaters, and it plays like a love letter to both versions of the team. Every fighter can wear their classic comic book costume or their look from the film, and characters who never appeared on screen were given matching movie-style designs so the whole roster feels like it belongs to the same universe. Wolverine, Cyclops, Storm, Gambit and Beast square off against the likes of Sabretooth and Magneto, with the boss characters unlockable for use outside versus mode.

Under the license is a straightforward, satisfying fighter. It uses a six-button layout, three punches and three kicks in the Street Fighter tradition, and although the stages are rendered in 3D, the action plays by the rules of a classic 2D fighting game. Each mutant's special moves come straight from their powers, from claws and optic blasts to weather control, and every character has finishing moves that send rounds out with a bang.

Developer Paradox Development, the team behind Wu-Tang: Shaolin Style, built the PlayStation version, and it was well received, with praise for its gameplay, smart computer opponents and graphics, even if critics noted how closely it followed Capcom's playbook. Its success launched a small series: X-Men: Mutant Academy 2 followed, then X-Men: Next Dimension on the next generation of consoles.

As the first chapter of that run and a snapshot of the moment the X-Men became movie stars, Mutant Academy is a fun, accessible pick-up-and-play fighter on original hardware, with a movie-and-comics roster that captures the summer of 2000 when Hugh Jackman's Wolverine first popped his claws on screen.

About the game

X-Men: Mutant Academy is a 3-D/2D fighting game developed by Paradox, the company behind Activision's Wu-Tang: Shaolin Style and the never-published Thrill Kill, and based on the X-Men characters from Marvel Comics. The game was released for the Game Boy Color and PlayStation as a tie-in to X-Men. X-Men: Mutant Academy is a basic fighting game that uses six buttons: three buttons for punches and three for kicks. Due to the success of the game, it was followed by two sequels: X-Men: Mutant Academy 2 and X-Men: Next Dimension. The game's characters can be played both with their comic book costumes and their costumes from the 2000 film X-Men. Characters not present in the film were given costumes of a similar design.
