Item Condition

Game + manual: the cartridge and its manual, no box. The photos are of this exact copy — look them over closely for its condition, packaging and details. Every cartridge's shell, label and board are checked for authenticity when it comes into the store, and it's tested before it's listed. It ships in a collector's bag or a hard plastic case.

Item Description

Magneto strikes the X-Men's headquarters and captures nearly the whole team. Only Wolverine and Cyclops escape, and getting everyone else back is the game. It is a terrific hook for a handheld action game, because every rescue grows your roster.

Finish a level and another mutant joins you: Storm, Rogue, Psylocke, Nightcrawler and Iceman can all take over once freed, each giving you a new way to tackle the stages. You punch, kick and jump through sprawling, maze-like levels, and mutant powers can be switched on and off, but they drain your character's energy, so knowing when to cut loose is a real part of the strategy. The settings read like a tour of '90s X-Men comics: the Morlock tunnels, the Savage Land, the Hellfire Club, Madripoor, the Brood homeworld and Avalon, with bosses including Callisto, Sauron, Sebastian Shaw, Omega Red, a Brood Queen and finally Magneto himself.

Sega of America developed it in-house, with Paul Hutchinson programming the game and composing its music, and it arrived in January 1994 at the height of the X-Men animated series' popularity. It was the top-selling Game Gear game in the US the following month, and GamePro raved that it "squeezes all the action and graphics it can into four megs of Marvel-ous comic book mayhem," adding that the long levels were complex enough to keep your battery bill high.

This is a separate game from the Genesis X-Men, with its own stages, bosses and rescue structure, and a Game Gear sequel, X-Men: Gamesmaster's Legacy, followed in 1995. It captures the team in its comic-book prime, deep cuts like Psylocke, Omega Red and Madripoor included, on a cartridge built to be played anywhere.

About the game

X-Men is a sidescrolling beat'em up/platform game, much like its homonymous Mega Drive/ Genesis counterpart. Several X-Men characters are playable throughout the game. The player can choose from two characters from the start, Cyclops and Wolverine, and three Levels are accessible. In the course of the game, the player can unlock five other X-Men, namely Storm, Iceman, Rogue, Nightcrawler and Psylocke.
