Complete in box: the cartridge, the manual and the box, all original. Original inserts or paperwork shown in the photos are included; display stands and other photography props are not. Every cartridge's shell, label and board are checked for authenticity when it comes into the store, and it's tested before it's listed. It ships in a collector's bag or a hard plastic case.

Item Description

Only two X-Men are ready for action when this mission begins. Sega's 1994 Game Gear X-Men starts you with a choice of Wolverine or Cyclops, and the rest of the team has to be earned, which gives the whole game a satisfying sense of building a squad as you go.

Three stages are open from the outset, so you choose your own path rather than marching in a straight line, and pushing through them expands the roster with five more mutants: Storm, Iceman, Rogue, Nightcrawler and Psylocke. Each brings their own powers to the side-scrolling action, so deciding who to send where becomes part of the challenge. Like the Genesis X-Men game of the same era, it blends platforming with hand-to-hand brawling, and the growing lineup keeps the action from settling into a single rhythm.

The roster reads like the early-90s team at its most popular. This was the era when X-Men: The Animated Series and the best-selling comics of the day had made Marvel's mutants one of the biggest names in pop culture, and Sega's handheld version arrived while that wave was at its peak, putting the cartoon generation's favorite heroes in a portable form.

It was the first of Sega's X-Men games for the Game Gear, followed by X-Men: Gamesmaster's Legacy and X-Men: Mojo World, which makes it the starting point of the handheld series and a fitting cartridge for anyone gathering the 90s X-Men on Sega hardware.

About the game

X-Men is a sidescrolling beat'em up/platform game, much like its homonymous Mega Drive/ Genesis counterpart. Several X-Men characters are playable throughout the game. The player can choose from two characters from the start, Cyclops and Wolverine, and three Levels are accessible. In the course of the game, the player can unlock five other X-Men, namely Storm, Iceman, Rogue, Nightcrawler and Psylocke.
