Item Description

Picture a full WWE pay-per-view squeezed into the palm of your hand: ring entrances, finishers, tables, ladders and championship gold, all running on a handheld. That was the promise of WWE SmackDown vs. Raw 2011 on the PSP, and Yuke's came remarkably close to keeping it. Published by THQ in 2010, it was the last game released under the SmackDown vs. Raw name before the series rebranded as WWE '12, and the last of the main annual WWE wrestling games to reach Sony's handheld, which gives it a neat place at the end of an era for portable wrestling.

The roster captures WWE at a moment of transition. John Cena and Randy Orton sit at the top of the card, Rey Mysterio brings the high-flying offense, The Undertaker looms over everything, CM Punk is at his self-righteous best and Sheamus had only recently crashed into the main event. The grappling system rewards timing and reading your opponent, building momentum toward signature moves and finishers that land with a satisfying thud, and the Create-a-Superstar tools let you design your own wrestler and drop him straight into the mix.

The heart of the single-player game is Road to WrestleMania, which returns with story-driven campaigns built around specific superstars. The decisions you make along the way steer where each storyline goes, so the same campaign can head somewhere new on another run. That branching gives each run some of the soap-opera momentum that makes WWE television fun to follow, and a reason to go back and see how things play out differently.

On the PSP, the appeal is wonderfully simple: a full-featured wrestling sim that travels anywhere, with local ad-hoc wireless play for settling a rivalry with a friend in the same room. As the final chapter of the SmackDown vs. Raw line, and the last of its kind on the PSP, the 2011 edition is the natural capstone to a handheld wrestling library.
