Hulk Hogan against John Cena, "Macho Man" Randy Savage across the ring from Randy Orton: WWE All Stars is built on the dream matches wrestling fans have argued about for decades. THQ's 2011 brawler throws out simulation entirely in favor of arcade action, with exaggerated, larger-than-life character designs, huge combos and finishers that send opponents flying.
The roster mixes legends and the stars of the day. On one side stand Hogan, Savage, the Ultimate Warrior, Andre the Giant, Bret Hart, Ricky Steamboat and Sgt. Slaughter; on the other, John Cena, Triple H, Big Show, The Undertaker, Rey Mysterio and The Miz, among others. Every wrestler falls into one of four fighting styles, from brawlers and grapplers to high-flying acrobats and lumbering big men, so a match between a speedy cruiserweight and a giant plays very differently from a slugfest between two powerhouses.
The combat is fast and approachable, with strikes, grapples and reversals building toward signature moves and finishers presented with cartoonish exaggeration. It is the kind of game that makes sense in short bursts, which suits the PSP well, and it was one of the last WWE games released for the system.
Its real draw is that cartoon-poster energy. No other WWE game looks or feels quite like All Stars, and on the PSP it offers a playable piece of wrestling's cross-generational fantasy: the chance to finally see who would have won.
