Few sounds in gaming are as ominous as the heavenly choir that heralds a Holy Hand Grenade. Worms Armageddon, Team17's 1999 high point for its turn-based artillery series, is the game where that grenade, the Super Sheep, the Banana Bomb and the Concrete Donkey became legend, and the Anniversary Edition brings it to PS5 for its 25th birthday.

The formula is simple and endlessly entertaining. Teams of tiny, wisecracking worms take turns lobbing ordnance across fully destructible landscapes, adjusting for wind, gravity and the chaotic bounce of a cluster bomb. More than 55 weapons and tools give every turn options, from the precise swing of the Ninja Rope to an Earthquake that rattles the whole map or a French Sheep Strike from above. A campaign of more than 40 missions and Deathmatch play keep solo players busy, but the real magic happens with friends: up to six players can battle in local multiplayer, plotting revenge between turns, with classic options like Allied Teams, handicapping, Worms Disease and Home Runs for tuning the madness.

The voices are half the fun, and more than 30 custom and comedy sound banks, including Stiff Upper Lip and Cyberworms, let every team trash-talk in its own style. Beyond the game itself, the Anniversary Edition release adds an interactive documentary about Armageddon's making and a museum-style timeline of the Worms series, a thoughtful nod to longtime fans.

This is the entry many players still consider the peak of the franchise, preserved faithfully for modern hardware. It is built for game nights where nobody is quite sure who is winning until the last sheep lands.
