Item Description
Pull up a seat in the bleachers for the TurboGrafx-16's first season. Hudson Soft's World Class Baseball arrived in the console's first year in North America, and it is a brisk, arcade-minded ballgame that gets you from the first pitch to the final out without fuss. In Japan it was released as Power League, the first entry in a long-running PC Engine baseball series, and this was the version that brought it west under a new name.
The action plays out from the familiar pitcher-versus-batter view, and the toolkit is fuller than you might expect from a 1989 game. Throw sliders and change-ups, try to pick runners off base, call in a relief pitcher when your starter tires, or lay down a bunt to move a runner over. Twelve teams with invented rosters fill the league, and you can play a quick exhibition game, chase a pennant, take on a friend or square off against the computer's Turbo Champs.
What makes it fun today is how quickly it moves. Innings fly by, the controls are simple enough to learn within a game, and the roar of the crowd and crack of the bat give it the energy of a day at the park. It is the kind of sports game that rewards a couple of friends and a free afternoon more than a stat sheet.
As one of the TurboGrafx-16's earliest sports releases and the American debut of Hudson's Power League series, it is a fitting piece of the console's launch-era library and a fun look at the franchise that kept PC Engine owners playing ball for years.
