Item Description

B.J. Blazkowicz goes over the wall of General Deathshead's fortress in 1946, takes a piece of shrapnel to the head and wakes up in a Polish asylum in 1960, to a world where the Nazis won the war. That is the setup of Wolfenstein: The New Order, and what MachineGames built on it surprised nearly everyone. A series known for pulpy corridor shooting came back with a sharp, darkly funny and often moving story, without giving up an ounce of its ferocity.

The shooting is heavy and loud in the best old-school way. Almost any weapon can be dual-wielded, health and armor are scattered around the levels rather than simply regenerating, and you can overcharge your health past its normal limit before a big fight. A lean-based cover system lets you peek around, over and under obstacles, and stealth is a real option: officers called commanders will summon reinforcements if they spot you, so silently knifing them first changes how an entire area plays out. The Laserkraftwerk, a cutting tool that slices through grates and chain-link, opens alternate routes. Perks unlock based on how you play, rewarding stealth kills, explosives or sheer dual-wielding mayhem.

Early on, Deathshead forces B.J. to choose which of two comrades, Fergus or Wyatt, will die, and that choice splits the story into two timelines with different characters, scenes and even unlockable abilities. The resistance cast is wonderful, from the nurse Anya to the brilliant Jewish scientist Set Roth and the fierce Caroline Becker, while Frau Engel makes for one of the genre's most chilling villains. The journey goes to some wild places, a Nazi concentration camp, an underwater base and, yes, the Moon, and Mick Gordon's grinding, distorted score keeps the energy high throughout.

MachineGames was founded by veterans of Starbreeze, the studio behind The Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay and The Darkness, and that pedigree for story-driven shooters shows. The team deliberately left out multiplayer to focus on the campaign, and the gamble paid off: The New Order relaunched Wolfenstein and led directly to The Old Blood and Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus. On PlayStation 4 it is where the modern Blazkowicz saga starts, and the place to begin if you want the full arc of the story.

About the game

Wolfenstein: The New Order is an action-adventure shooter game played from a first-person perspective. It is the semi-sequel to 2009's Wolfenstein, however utilizes very little from the game and drops any direct references to veil or supernatural. To progress through the story, the player battle enemies throughout levels. The game utilizes a health system in which players' health is divided into separate sections that regenerate; if an entire section is lost, the player must use a health pack to replenish the missing health. In combat, a cover system can be used as assistance against enemies. The player have the ability to lean around, over, and under cover, which can be used as a tactical advantage during shootouts and stealth levels. The game gives the player a wide variety of weapon options—they can be found on the ground, retrieved from dead enemies, or removed from their stationary position and carried around.
