Item Description
Withering Boon is one of those classic Mirage-era oddities that still makes experienced players do a double-take: a black counterspell—specifically for creature spells. In a color that’s usually all about removal after the fact, Withering Boon gives black something it almost never gets: the ability to stop a creature from ever hitting the battlefield in the first place.
In Commander, this card shines as a surprise piece of interaction in mono-black or black-heavy decks, especially in metas where the most dangerous threats are creatures with powerful enter-the-battlefield effects. Instead of letting that game-warping creature resolve and trying to clean up the mess later, Withering Boon can shut it down immediately—at instant speed—often catching opponents completely off guard. The life payment is a small price to pay for the tempo swing and the “wait… black can do that?” moment.
It’s also a fantastic inclusion in old-school themed decks, Mirage block nostalgia builds, and collections focused on unique color pie breaks from Magic’s early design years. Mirage is full of strange, creative cards, and Withering Boon is one of the most memorable examples—a spell that feels like a relic from an era when Magic was still experimenting with what each color could do.
If you love unconventional interaction, surprise answers, and classic black spells that punch above their weight, Withering Boon is a Mirage staple worth owning.
