Item Description

"Beware, I live!" Sinistar's booming threat was among the most unnerving sounds in any early-'80s arcade, and it is just one reason Williams Arcade's Greatest Hits makes such a rich time capsule. Digital Eclipse assembled six Williams classics for the PlayStation: Defender, Defender II, Joust, Robotron: 2084, Sinistar and Bubbles, a lineup drawn from a creative streak few arcade makers ever matched.

Defender, designed by Eugene Jarvis and Larry DeMar, is the blueprint for the frantic side-scrolling shooter. You skim over a planet's surface protecting humanoids from abducting Landers, with smart bombs and hyperspace as last-ditch escapes, and the screen never stops moving. Defender II, first released in arcades as Stargate, piles on more enemies and more chaos. Robotron: 2084, also from Jarvis and DeMar, drops you into a single screen swarming with machines as you try to rescue the last human family, and its relentless pace still sends the pulse racing.

Joust trades spaceships for knights riding flying ostriches and settles every collision by altitude: whoever is higher on impact wins, so every flap of the wings is a decision. Its two-player design invites friends to cooperate or betray each other at will. Sinistar has you mining crystals to build Sinibombs before that giant skull face finishes assembling and comes hunting, and Bubbles, the gentle oddball of the set, casts you as a soap bubble scrubbing a kitchen sink clean.

Rounding things out are video interviews with the original developers, a thoughtful extra that turns the disc into a small history lesson as well as a game. These are short, brutal, score-chasing games where one more try is always tempting, and having them together shows how much invention one company packed into a few short years. As a mid-'90s PlayStation compilation, it is a terrific way to experience the Williams golden age at full intensity.
