Item Description
A boar the size of a house comes barreling out of a blooming meadow, and with a few quick button presses a wooden wall snaps up out of nowhere to stop it cold. That moment captures what makes Wild Hearts so much fun. Omega Force, the studio behind Dynasty Warriors, took the giant-monster-hunting formula and added a twist nobody else had tried: karakuri, ancient mechanical devices you assemble in real time, in the middle of a fight.
The building is the hook. Basic karakuri like crates and springs let you vault into the air for a plunging strike or bounce clear of a charge, and stacking the right pieces in quick succession creates combined fusion karakuri, such as a towering wall that halts a stampeding Kingtusk or a huge hammer that comes crashing down on a beast's head. Dragon karakuri add a third, permanent layer, letting you build zip lines, camps and other structures that reshape the hunting grounds over time. Eight weapon types each have their own feel, from the heavy nodachi to the umbrella-like bladed wagasa, and the hunt was designed for up to three players working together, with a small mechanical Tsukumo companion to back up solo hunters.
The setting is Azuma, a fantasy land inspired by feudal Japan, where enormous nature-infused beasts called kemono are tearing up and transforming the landscape. You base yourself in Minato, a frontier town clinging to a cliffside, and head out after creatures like the fiery Lavaback or the wolf-like Deathstalker, which drags winter in with it. Every kemono feels like a force of nature, and part of the thrill is watching the environment bloom, freeze or burn around each fight. Critics singled out how gorgeous the monsters and world look, and the PlayStation 5 gives those sweeping vistas plenty of room to breathe.
Wild Hearts arrived in 2023 as a serious challenger to Monster Hunter under the EA Originals banner, and while it never received a sequel, it won over hunters who loved how its building system turns every encounter into an improvised puzzle. Nothing else in the genre plays quite like it. Reach for it when you want the thrill of a giant-monster hunt with an engineer's toolkit, built by a Japanese studio with a long history of big, bombastic action.
