Item Description

A lone whistle drifting over open prairie, a young wanderer whose arm can bond with weapons left behind by a vanished civilization, a princess with a gift for magic: Wild ARMs has always looked at fantasy through a gunslinger's squint. Alter Code: F is Media.Vision's full remake of its own 1996 PlayStation original, rebuilt in 3D for the PlayStation 2, first released in Japan in 2003 and brought to North America by Agetec in 2005. The world is still Filgaia, a dry, weathered frontier where the ARMs, or Ancient Relic Machines, are as feared as they are coveted.

The heart of it is the trio of Dream Chasers. Rudy is the quiet drifter who can wield ARMs, Jack is a sword-swinging treasure hunter who travels with a wind mouse named Hanpan, and Cecilia is a runaway princess who commands magic. Each of them carries field tools that turn dungeons into puzzle rooms: Rudy's bombs clear obstacles, Cecilia's staff lights torches, and Hanpan scurries off to press switches and fetch treasure Jack can't reach. Working out which hero to lead with is a big part of the fun, and more tools turn up as the journey goes on.

Battles were rebuilt as well. Every character has a specialty that runs on ammunition or magic, from Rudy's ARM cartridges to Jack's sword skills and Cecilia's crest spells, plus a Force meter that fills during combat and is spent in quarter-gauge chunks on abilities like Jack's Accelerator, which lets him act first on the next turn. Spells and skills are found out in the world rather than handed out at level-up, so exploration pays off directly. The remake also widens the cast with optional recruits, letting the roster grow to six while three fight at a time, and its Migrant meter lets you skip a limited number of random encounters with a quick button press when an exclamation point appears.

The original Wild ARMs reached North America before Final Fantasy VII and became a cult favorite on the strength of its Western-meets-fantasy identity, a blend of six-shooters, sorcery and ancient machinery that still feels unusual today. Alter Code: F keeps that story largely intact and holds on to the score's strumming guitars and whistled melodies, while giving the whole adventure a modern 3D look. Its battles are deliberate rather than flashy, and the main quest runs around 30 hours before optional dungeons and bosses. It is the fullest telling of the story that started the series, and a natural companion to the later Wild ARMs games on PlayStation 2.

About the game

Although it is essentially a remake of the original PlayStation version of Wild Arms, Alter Code F brings enhanced gameplay, improved graphics, and an expanded storyline to the PS2. Players take command of three unlikely companions in a surreal and desolate world called Filgaia. The young orphan Rudy has a unique ability to physically bond with "ARMs," or "Ancient Relic Machines," which seem to have been left behind by a forgotten civilization. The runaway princess Cecelia can command forces of magic, and the swordsman Jack is adept at a number of trades. These three "Dream Chasers" seek their fortunes in the unforgiving countryside, and might just end up saving the whole world along the way. The role-playing adventure includes overworld exploration and intense dungeon-crawling. Wild ARMs: Alter Code F is compatible with the PlayStation 2 HDD, so veteran PS2 gamers with older model consoles and the hard drive accessory can load the large, two-DVD game program to disk in order to decrease load times.
