Item Description

Ashley Winchester never wanted to be a hero. A young soldier from the town of Meria, he watches his entire unit fall to demonic possession during a summoning ritual staged by the terrorist group Odessa, and when the demon takes him too, he reaches for the legendary sword Argetlahm and finds himself face to face with both Lord Blazer, the demon who once set Filgaia ablaze, and the Sword Magess who sealed him away a thousand years before. Ashley walks out of that ritual with something terrible living inside him, and Wild Arms 2 spends the rest of its story asking what he will do with it.

A mysterious benefactor named Irving recruits him into ARMS, an elite team formed to fight Odessa, alongside Lilka Eleniak, a teenage Crest Sorceress in training, and Brad Evans, a war hero turned convict. Tim, Kanon and the secret character Marivel round out a party of six, with three fighting at once and reserves swapped in mid-battle. Each hero carries field Tools that turn dungeons into puzzle boxes: Brad's Kick Boots shove heavy objects, his bombs blast walls, Ashley's Hurl Knife and Flare Gun hit distant targets, and Lilka's Fire, Freeze and Change rods light torches, freeze obstacles and turn giant gems into blocks you can climb. Battles are turn-based and fully 3D, driven by each character's response speed, with powerful Guardians to summon when things get desperate.

Filgaia itself is the series' calling card: a dying planet of spreading desert where Old West gunslingers, steampunk machinery, magic and demons share the same dusty roads. Michiko Naruke's score, with its lonesome whistles and frontier melodies, gives the whole adventure the melancholy, wide-open feel that defines Wild Arms.

Developed by Media.Vision, Wild Arms 2 is set in the same world as the original but tells a completely new story, so it works perfectly as a starting point. It arrived late in the PS1's life alongside heavy hitters like Final Fantasy IX and Vagrant Story and was easy to overlook, but players who found it got a long, earnest, puzzle-rich RPG with one of the era's most conflicted leading men, and a direct line to the PS2 entries that followed.

About the game

Wild Arms 2 is not a direct sequel to the first Wild Arms, although it is set in the same fictional world Filgaia, which combines elements of Old West, steampunk, and fantasy. The turn-based combat system against randomly appearing enemies resembles that of the predecessor, featuring techniques unique to each character, as well as the Guardian system, which allows the characters to summon powerful creatures to assist them in battles. Three combatants can be used actively in battles; the player can also switch any of them with a reserve character, up to six altogether.
