The first time a Tyranid tide spills over a wall, hundreds of chittering bodies piling into a living ramp, it becomes clear what Saber Interactive built Space Marine II to do. The studio's swarm technology, honed on World War Z, throws enormous hordes at you, and the game hands you the tools to answer them: bolters, plasma weapons, a roaring chainsword and the sheer bulk of a power-armored Ultramarine.
Demetrian Titus is back, now voiced by Clive Standen. A century after the events of Relic's 2011 original, and after long service in the Deathwatch, he returns to the Ultramarines as a Primaris Lieutenant, fighting beside battle-brothers Chairon and Gadriel in a campaign that pits the squad against both the Tyranid hive fleets and the sorcerous Thousand Sons of Chaos. The combat loop is brutally satisfying: parry and dodge to open enemies up, finish them with gory executions that restore your armor, and keep pushing forward, because standing still is how you die.
The campaign was designed for three-player co-op, with AI battle-brothers filling the empty slots in solo play. Alongside it sit Operations, co-op missions that run parallel to the story with six classes such as Assault, Vanguard, Bulwark and Heavy, and Eternal War, the player-versus-player mode. Each Operations class levels up its own perks and weapons, and the armor customization lets you paint your Marine in the colors of other chapters as well as the Ultramarines' blue. Where many licensed games shrink their setting to fit, Space Marine II goes big, embracing the grand scale and gothic grandeur of the 41st millennium.
It became a huge hit on release, and it earned that success by understanding the fantasy completely. For anyone who has painted an Ultramarine, read a Black Library novel or simply wanted to feel like humanity's last armored wall, this is the 40K game to own on PS5.
The galaxy is in peril. Entire worlds are falling. The Imperium needs you. Embody the superhuman skill and brutality of a Space Marine, the greatest of the Emperor's warriors, with Clive Standen (Vikings, Taken) as the iconic Captain Titus. Unleash deadly abilities and an arsenal of devastating weaponry to obliterate the relentless Tyranid hordes. Hold at bay the horrors of the galaxy in epic battles on far-flung planets. Uncover dark secrets and drive back the everlasting night to prove your ultimate loyalty to humanity.
