Real-time strategy on a gamepad was a tough sell in the late '90s, and that is exactly what makes Warcraft II: The Dark Saga such a fascinating stop in PlayStation history. Blizzard's Warcraft II was the game that turned Orcs versus Humans into a full-blown phenomenon on PC, and this console edition brings the whole war to the living room, combining the missions of Warcraft II: Tides of Darkness with those of its expansion, Beyond the Dark Portal.

The rhythm is pure Blizzard. Peasants and peons haul gold and lumber, farms keep your forces supplied, and every new building unlocks something more dangerous. The Alliance fields footmen, elven archers, knights and gryphon riders; the Horde answers with grunts, troll axethrowers, ogres and dragons, and both sides eventually call on spellcasters such as mages and death knights. Warcraft II also took the conflict to sea, so oil platforms, tankers and warships turn coastal maps into a second front where control of the water can decide the whole battle. Bold colors, chunky fantasy sprites and wisecracking unit voices give it a personality its competitors rarely matched.

Rather than simply shrinking the PC game, the console version rethinks how you command an army. An auto-build option lets you queue up units for production, so your barracks keep working while your attention is on the front line, and you can select up to sixteen units at once, compared to nine on PC, which makes sweeping a whole strike force across the map far less fiddly with a controller in hand. It is a thoughtful adaptation, and it was well received at the time, with the Saturn edition of The Dark Saga named a runner-up for Strategy Game of the Year by Electronic Gaming Monthly.

Warcraft rarely strayed from computers, which gives this edition real curiosity value on a PlayStation shelf. The Alliance-versus-Horde rivalry it carries would go on to power Warcraft III and World of Warcraft, but here it plays out on a TV screen in the years when Blizzard was still building its legend. Strategy fans get a complete Second War to fight from the couch, exactly as console players first saw it.
