Item Description

Vs. started life as Fighters' Impact, a 1996 Taito arcade fighter built by Polygon Magic, and THQ had it rebuilt from the ground up for American players. The engine and core mechanics stayed, but everything you see and hear changed: a brand-new lineup of twenty street fighters designed by former Marvel Comics artist Kurtis Fujita, new arenas, and a soundtrack of licensed music. Fujita's goal, in his words, was characters that Americans could identify with, while keeping the visual flair of Japanese anime and manga.

The hook is turf. Sixteen fighters are available from the start, each repping one of four rival street gangs, and you take your crew into the other gangs' neighborhoods across twelve arenas based on real-life locations. Four bosses unlock once you meet the right conditions. The fighters were motion-captured at Polygon Magic's Tokyo studio, and their styles draw on karate, aikido and kung fu. Critics singled out the fast frame rate and a slick evade move as standouts, and the punk and industrial soundtrack features Razed in Black, the Suicide Machines, Los Infernos and Pigs in Space.

Reviews were lukewarm, mostly because of timing: GamePro called it an extremely competent game unlucky enough to arrive after Tekken 2, Soul Blade and Fighters Megamix, and EGM's Sushi-X said the music saved much of the game for him. That obscurity is now part of its appeal. Vs. is a true deep cut of the 32-bit fighting boom, a grittier, street-level alternative to the fantasy tournaments of its day, and a fun discovery for PlayStation fighting collectors who think they have seen it all.
