Item Description

For a great many Japanese players in late 1995, Virtua Fighter 2 was the reason to own a Saturn. Sega AM2's arcade sequel, overseen by Yu Suzuki, had pushed 3D fighting to a new level of fluidity and detail, and squeezing it onto home hardware looked like a tall order. The Saturn version answered with a high-resolution picture running at a smooth 60 frames per second, a huge leap over the system's launch port of the first Virtua Fighter and an early sign of what the console could do in expert hands.

In the ring, VF2 is all about precision. Each fighter brings a real-world discipline: Akira Yuki's Bajiquan, the kung fu of Pai and Lau Chan, Jeffry McWild's pankration, Wolf Hawkfield's pro wrestling, Kage-Maru's ninjutsu, and the Jeet Kune Do of siblings Jacky and Sarah Bryant. The sequel adds Lion Rafale, a young fighter using mantis-style kung fu, and Shun Di, an elderly drunken-fist master who unlocks new techniques the more he drinks mid-match. Bouts are decided by spacing, timing and reading your opponent, and ring-outs punish anyone who drifts too close to the edge.

Fight your way through the arcade ladder and Dural, the silver, liquid-metal boss, is waiting at the end, while versus matches against a friend are where the depth of the system really opens up. Few fighting games of the era asked as much of players or gave back as much once a character finally clicked.

The game became one of the Saturn's biggest hits in Japan, and the Japanese release is the form in which it first made that impact. For collectors building a Saturn import shelf, or anyone who wants to see why Sega's 3D fighters set the pace in the mid-90s, this is the game to play on the console it helped sell.
