Item Description

Japan's soccer fever was still running hot in the mid-90s, with the young J.League filling stadiums and television schedules, and Sega wanted its brand-new Saturn on the pitch from the start. Victory Goal, a 1995 Japan-exclusive, was the Saturn's first soccer game from Sega and the beginning of the series that Western players would come to know through Sega International Victory Goal and the Worldwide Soccer games.

The back of the box made big promises for an early 32-bit sports title: six modes of play, up to four players at once and a roster of 192 players drawn from the league. That four-player support is the part that still matters most. With friends on the couch splitting into teams, it becomes a loud, scrappy, wonderfully mid-90s kind of soccer game, where a well-timed pass and a lucky finish can swing a match and an argument at the same time.

Playing it now is also a look at how quickly the Saturn's sports games evolved. Sega's soccer series improved year after year from here, and Victory Goal is the first draft, the version where the team was still working out what the new hardware could do for a sport that lives on movement and space. For collectors, that makes it the starting point of a run that includes International Victory Goal and the Worldwide Soccer releases that followed.

As a Japanese release it also carries the import appeal of the Saturn's home-market library, the side of the console that never reached North American shelves. It is a fun pickup for anyone tracing Sega's sports history back to its first Saturn kickoff.
