Item Description

Nearly a year before Final Fantasy Tactics reached North America, Konami put a tactical RPG on the PlayStation that showed what the genre could look like in three dimensions. Vandal Hearts sets its grid-based battles on fully 3D maps you can rotate around, with sloped hills, rivers and rooftops, and where you stand matters as much as who you attack. High ground helps, low ground hurts, and a careless advance into the wrong terrain can unravel a whole battle.

The story unfolds in the Republic of Ishtaria, born when a revolution overthrew the Holy Ashah Dynasty, now rotting from corruption within. Ash Lambert, a young soldier carrying the weight of his disgraced family name, uncovers a conspiracy reaching from General Magnus Dunbar to a mysterious magical stone, and finds himself fighting the ruthless Crimson Guard, the would-be usurper Dolf and the ancient threat of Hel. Allies like Diego, Clint, Eleni, Dolan and Kira join the cause, and the legends of Arris the Sage and Toroah the Messiah hang over everything.

Battles are built on a clear rock-paper-scissors logic among the Swordsman, Armor, Archer, Hawknight, Monk, Mage and Cleric classes: archers punish airborne Hawknights, Hawknights swoop down on swordsmen, and mages crack heavy armor. Units promote into stronger classes as they grow, some maps swap the usual rout for special objectives, and if Ash falls the battle ends on the spot. Dedicated players can also seek out a set of hidden trials scattered through the campaign that rewards Ash with a secret class.

Electronic Gaming Monthly made it a Game of the Month and a runner-up for its Strategy Game of the Year, and the game went on to spawn Vandal Hearts II and the later prequel Vandal Hearts: Flames of Judgment. It is a foundational piece of PlayStation strategy history and an excellent pick for tactics fans who have already worn out Final Fantasy Tactics and Tactics Ogre and want the game that got to the PS1 first.
