Sixteen years separated Valkyrie Profile 2: Silmeria from the next home-console game in Square Enix's Norse-myth series, and when Valkyrie Elysium finally arrived in 2022 it made a bold change. The turn-based battles of tri-Ace's PlayStation classics gave way to fast, real-time action. You play a Valkyrie created by Odin himself and sent down to Midgard to purify lost souls and strengthen the wounded All-Father as Ragnarok closes in and the great wolf Fenrir looms.

Combat is the heart of it. The Valkyrie strings together sword combos, elemental magic and a soul-bound chain that whips her across the battlefield to close distance in an instant, and matching elements against enemy weaknesses is the key to breaking down tougher foes. Her real signature, though, is the Einherjar: fallen human warriors resurrected to serve Odin, who can be summoned mid-battle to fight at her side and who each carry their own story of how they died. Out in the ruined world, Hollow Blossoms let her relive the memories of the dead, while the harder-to-read Verdan Blossoms decide which ending you reach.

A thread of distrust runs through the story. A rogue Valkyrie named Hilde warns her not to trust Odin, and the question of what the All-Father really wants hangs over every soul she gathers. Motoi Sakuraba, who scored the original Valkyrie Profile in 1999, returns with a sweeping soundtrack, and the character art and voice cast drew some of the warmest praise from critics.

Reviews landed in mixed territory, with the slick combat and music applauded and the sparse world and modest budget criticized, so it is best approached as a compact, stylish action RPG rather than a sprawling epic. It reimagines the series for a new generation, and hearing Sakuraba's Norse themes drive a much faster style of play is a treat in its own right.
