Item Description
Leá Monde was once a thriving city in the kingdom of Valendia. Now it lies ruined by an earthquake, steeped in dark magic and crawling with the undead, and it is where Ashley Riot, an elite agent known as a Riskbreaker, pursues the cult leader Sydney Losstarot after a bloody siege at Duke Bardorba's manor. What waits inside the city is a conspiracy tangled up with church politics, the knights of the Crimson Blade, the Inquisitor Callo Merlose and the unsettling question of what really happened to Ashley's wife and child.
Combat in Vagrant Story is a remarkable hybrid. Draw a weapon and a sphere of reach appears around Ashley; step within range and the action pauses so you can target an enemy's head, arms, legs or body, each with its own weakness. Then the real skill kicks in. Chain Abilities let you strike again by pressing a button at the exact instant a hit lands, stringing together long combos, while Defense Abilities counter incoming blows with the same split-second timing. Push your luck and the Risk meter climbs, sharpening Ashley's critical hits but making him clumsier and easier to hurt, so every fight becomes a tug-of-war between greed and caution.
Equipment is a game unto itself. Weapons are assembled from blades and grips at workshops scattered through the city, combined and refined from what you loot, and they grow more effective against particular enemy types and elements the more you use them. Between battles, Leá Monde's cellars, catacombs and forests are full of crate-stacking puzzles and traps that demand as much thought as the fights.
This is the team behind Final Fantasy Tactics at full power. Director Yasumi Matsuno, artist Akihiko Yoshida and composer Hitoshi Sakimoto pushed the PlayStation remarkably far with detailed real-time 3D environments, comic-style speech bubbles and a brooding, Shakespearean script rendered in deliberately archaic English. Famitsu awarded it a perfect score, a rare honor at the time, and its world later proved to be part of Ivalice, the setting of Final Fantasy XII. Demanding, atmospheric and unlike anything else Square made, it rewards patience like few games on the system and belongs near the top of any serious PlayStation RPG shelf.
