Item Description
Urban Reign comes from Namco, the house of Tekken and Soulcalibur, and you can feel that pedigree in every grab and reversal. On the surface it is a 3D street brawler in the tradition of Double Dragon and Final Fight; underneath, it is built with the precision of a one-on-one fighting game, which makes it a very different animal from the button-mashers it shared shelf space with.
You play Brad Hawk, a stoic fighter hired by Shun Ying Lee, the leader of a Chinatown triad, to bring order to a city torn between rival gangs. The story mode runs more than 100 missions across alleys, warehouses, underground fight clubs and arenas, usually with you badly outnumbered. Combat uses regional damage, so attacks target the head, chest or legs, and repeated head shots leave opponents staggering. The square button handles dodges, reversals and counters, special arts throw in wrestling moves like a running powerbomb and a stunner, and around thirty weapons are there for the taking.
Partners add a layer of strategy. At points in the story, an AI ally fights alongside you, though you often have to beat them first before they will join. Once they are on your side, you can call them in for help, pull off double-team moves and even switch control between them and Brad. Finish the story and Free Mode and Challenge Mode open up, and multiplayer supports up to four players with a multitap, drawing on a roster of up to 60 characters, including a pair of Tekken favorites, Paul Phoenix and Marshall Law, who make cameo appearances after the credits.
Be warned: Urban Reign gets tough, with late-game opponents like Napalm 99 and the hulking Golem spiking the difficulty hard. That challenge is part of its cult appeal. It is a brawler with real fighting-game bones, rarely matched before or since, and a standout pick for anyone building out the PS2's deep bench of beat-'em-ups.
