Item Description

A hack-and-slash dungeon crawler with four classes, mountains of loot and drop-in friends was exactly the kind of game the PSP needed on day one, and Untold Legends: Brotherhood of the Blade was there for the North American launch in 2005. Developed by Sony Online Entertainment, it brought the Diablo-style formula to a handheld long before that was common.

You create a hero from one of four orders, the Knight, the Berserker, the Alchemist or the Druid, and set out from the city of Aven, which serves as your hub between expeditions. The threat starts with an infestation of giant spiders and grows from there as you push deeper through a chain of dungeons and wilderness areas. Your class decides what you can equip and whether you fight up close, from range or by drawing on magical power, and leveling up lets you shape the hero further. Loot drops from fallen foes or can be bought in town, and small trinkets can be used to enhance weapons and armor and customize your gear.

The co-op was a big part of the launch appeal. Up to three friends with their own PSPs can join a hosted game over local wireless, each bringing their own character, with a trading interface for swapping finds and rules for splitting the gold. Clearing dungeons side by side with friends on handhelds felt like a small revolution in 2005.

Brotherhood of the Blade led to a sequel, The Warrior's Code, and it is a fond piece of PSP launch-day history: a straightforward, satisfying loot hunt for players who like their dungeon crawls quick and their character builds personal.
