Few shooters reward muscle memory like Unreal Tournament, and Unreal Tournament III brought that knife-edge arena action to the PlayStation 3 in late 2007, ahead of the Xbox 360 version. Epic Games built it on Unreal Engine 3, the same technology behind Gears of War, BioShock and Mass Effect, and used it to show off heavy, industrial arenas, slick particle effects and a frantic pace that console shooters of the day rarely attempted.

The weapons are the stars. The Flak Cannon shreds anyone foolish enough to turn a corner in front of you, the Shock Rifle rewards the classic trick of detonating its own energy ball with a beam for a devastating combo, the Rocket Launcher loads several rockets for a single volley, and the Redeemer drops a small nuclear explosion on a crowded room. Deathmatch, Team Deathmatch, Duel and Capture the Flag are as pure as the series has ever been, while Vehicle Capture the Flag and the new Warfare mode turn sprawling maps into battlefields of Manta hovercraft, Scorpion buggies, Goliath tanks and the Necris faction's spider-legged Darkwalkers. New hoverboards let players skate across open ground and grapple onto friendly vehicles for a tow.

A campaign follows Reaper and his squad on a revenge mission against the Necris, threading the multiplayer maps into a story, and the bot AI is sharp enough to fill every arena with convincing opponents across a ladder of difficulty settings. The PS3 version also earned a place in console history by allowing user-created mods and maps from the PC community to be loaded onto the system, plus support for a USB keyboard and mouse, a level of openness almost unheard of on consoles at the time.

Unreal Tournament III was the last full boxed release in a series that defined the arena shooter alongside Quake. Its online matchmaking was built for an era whose servers have long since gone dark, but the arenas, the weapons and the bots are all on the disc, and few PS3 shooters match its raw speed. It is the closest thing to a LAN party the PlayStation 3 ever shipped.
