Item Description

The best trick in Unknown 9: Awakening is leaving your own body behind. Haroona, played by Anya Chalotra of Netflix's The Witcher, is a Quaestor, one of the rare people who can reach into the Fold, a hidden dimension running beneath ordinary reality. In a fight, that means shadow-stepping into a guard's body and turning his weapon on his own squad, or chaining up to three possessions that all play out at once when she snaps back into herself. It is a clever, satisfying power, and the game's best encounters are built around it.

The story is set in the early twentieth century and opens in northern India. Haroona's mentor, Reika, was brought down years earlier by Vincent, her former pupil, who now leads the Ascendants, a radical splinter of the secretive Leap Year Society. Haroona's hunt for him grows into something much bigger than revenge, as she falls in with Luther, a weathered old cowboy of the Leap Year Society, chases Vincent's stolen airship and pushes ever deeper into the Fold itself. Between possessions she can turn invisible, sense enemies through walls and hurl Fold energy at her foes, so an encounter can be picked apart quietly from the tall grass or turned into a chaotic brawl.

Awakening was made by Reflector Entertainment, the Montreal studio co-founded by Cirque du Soleil's Guy Laliberté, as the opening chapter of a transmedia universe that also spans novels, comics and a scripted podcast. Reviews were mixed: critics singled out Chalotra's performance and the inventive possession mechanic while finding the action rough around the edges, and the planned sequels were later cancelled.

That leaves Awakening as the only playable chapter of the Unknown 9 saga, a self-contained pulp adventure full of secret societies, an airship and a heroine who fights by borrowing other people's bodies. If you like story-driven action games that take a swing at something unusual, it is a fascinating one-off to own on PS5.
