Picture a whole continent laid out like a war table, with occupied towns, enemy squads marching down the roads and a rebel army that is entirely yours to design. That is the pull of Unicorn Overlord, the 2024 tactical RPG from Vanillaware and Atlus, and once its systems click it is very hard to put down. The studio behind Odin Sphere and 13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim pours its hand-painted art into a classic fantasy war story: Prince Alain of Cornia, raised in exile after the traitorous General Valmore overthrew his homeland and rose as Emperor Galerius of the Zenoiran Empire, returns to lead a war of liberation across the continent of Fevrith.

The genius is in how battles work. Units are small squads arranged in front and back rows, and every member carries a set of tactics you write in advance: heal only when an ally is badly hurt, aim the bow at fliers first, save the big skill for the enemy leader. On the map, units march in real time toward forts and enemy groups, and when two collide the fight shifts to a side-on view and plays out automatically, a showcase of Vanillaware animation that succeeds or fails on the plan you built. Valor points, earned by defeating enemies and capturing towns, let you deploy reinforcements or unleash special skills at the decisive moment. With more than sixty recruitable characters spanning humans, elves, beast-kin and angels, the possible squad combinations feel endless, and tinkering with them becomes its own reward.

Between battles, the game opens into a big, explorable overworld spread across five nations: Cornia, Drakenhold, the elven woods of Elheim, the snowbound beast-kin lands of Bastorias and the angelic holy land of Albion. Liberated towns need rebuilding, Honor earned along the way expands your squads and lets you field more of them at once, and the Rapport system builds bonds through tavern meals and gifts, unlocking conversations that flesh out a very large cast. Basiscape's orchestral score, led by Mitsuhiro Kaneda, gives each nation its own overworld and battle themes.

Critics were quick to compare it to the Ogre Battle games of the 1990s, and the praise followed: Metacritic scores in the upper 80s, an Award for Excellence at the Japan Game Awards 2024, a Game Awards nomination for Best Sim/Strategy Game and more than a million copies sold by September 2024. If you have ever wished someone would build a squad-tactics game with that era's depth and today's polish, this is the answer, and the most strategically ambitious game Vanillaware has made.
